Hi all

I'm new to this,but here I go.

my wife great grandad was in as we are told in one of the first tanks in action in Flers-Courcelette.but I can't find anything about him.

my father in law gave my son his medals his name and number are

Driver Alfred W White M2/049268, 76504

we are told their tank took a direct hit by an artillery round and he was the only one who was not killed but he was wounded

Sadly, I have not found any records other that his medal index card.

His tank service number would indicate he joined the tanks in 1917 but after those who served with the original cmpanies in 1916.

Can you tell me anymore about him

hi

he was in the army service corp as a dispatch rider when he joined and he was transfered to the tanks as they didnt have drivers.

he used to be a taxi driver and fix them in alresford hampshire so i guess that is why he became a driver.

i found the medal card but nothing else.

we were told that he was in one of the first six tanks into battle

in Flers-Courcelette. i don't know if it was there the tank got hit.

his tank took a direct hit from a artillery round and all except him was killed.

my wifes uncle has the piece of scrapnel they took from his head.

he got well and went back into the tanks.

i have his medals cap badge and a picture of him in a leather tank corp frame but he is wearing the army service corp badge???

many thanks

stuart
